The year 2025 marks the official beginning of the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution.
But, the American Revolution may have unofficially started well before that because of several incidents. The Boston Massacre of several protesting Bostonians by British troops was March 5, 1770. The Boston Tea Party, where disguised Colonials dumped British tea into the harbor was Dec. 16, 1773.
The "official" start of the American Revolution is generally considered to be April 19, 1775, when The Minute Men fired on British troops marching from Boston to confiscate gun powder stored in Lexington and Concord, Mass. The Mecklenburg Militia responded with a call for American Independence just a month later.
The Mecklenburg Militia, a Carolinas-based, family-oriented reenactment regiment, is recruiting new members to commemorate this historic period. Please look over our website and join us in reenacting those dramatic moments that shaped the future United States of America!
On May 20, 1775, members of the Mecklenburg Militia wrote The Mecklenburg Declaration (The Meck Dec) declaring the need for independence from Great Britain. That is more than a year before "The" Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Lord Cornwallis (at left) declared Mecklenburg "a hornet's nest of resistance."
