During the Colonial era, men between the ages of 16 and 50 were expected to keep arms and defend their communities when threats arose. All occupations were expected to serve. There were no upper age limits so men older than 50 often served. Women may portray soldiers in the Mecklenburg Militia if they can pass as a male in appropriate period clothes from a distance of 50 feet. Women are welcome in camp portraying roles as cooks, clothes washers, camp followers, etc. The Mecklenburg Militia portrays both Patriot and Crown militia as circumstances demand. As we portray civilians in temporary military duty, there is no standard military uniform such as the blue coats of the Patriot Continental Line or the red coats of the British Army.
Arms-carrying members must be at least 16 years old. Those children under 16 may be assigned non-combatant roles if they wish to actively participate. Members are expected to make at least four events during the year. (We generally schedule 10-12 events each year.)
Campfire-cooked meals are usually provided at reasonable cost. Payment is in advance. Members are expected to help set up and tear down the commissary tent; clean the company's cooking utensils, etc. Members are expected to respect each other, and refrain from excessive drinking. No illegal drugs are allowed. Smoking should be from a period pipe.
